Amputation Reconstruction

The NYU Center for Amputation Reconstruction is a specialized interdisciplinary facility dedicated to providing comprehensive care for individuals dealing with limb loss and limb difference. Our team comprises skilled surgeons, pain management specialists, prosthetists, occupational therapies, and research aides, all possessing expertise in serving this specific population. Our primary goal is to deliver the utmost quality of care, support, and guidance as individuals navigate their physical and emotional recovery. We acknowledge that the journey of limb loss encompasses not only physical adjustments but also psychological and emotional well-being. We assign each patient a group of specialists who collaborate to establish a plan of care aligned with their personal goals. Our aim is to advocate for and empower our patients to achieve optimal functional engagement in their daily lives.

Our surgeons are experts in cutting-edge surgical techniques and prosthetic advancements. We offer treatments designed to alleviate pain, address phantom limb sensations, and enhance movement and functionality of both the residual limb and the prosthetic.

These treatments encompass:

  • A two-step surgical procedure that permanently implants the prosthesis into the bone.

  • A surgical procedure to alleviate chronic pain and enhance control over myoelectric prosthesis.

  • A surgical technique that improves nerve stimulation, pain management, and prosthetic control.

  • Surgical revision of the amputated limb, whether recent or historic, to reduce pain, enhance prosthetic fit, or rectify issues stemming from ill-fitting prosthetics.

  • In some cases, elective amputation can be considered to enhance movement and overall quality of life. Our center has the knowledge and resources to assist individuals making this decision.

Prosthetists

Our center houses two prosthetic teams onsite, available for those without an existing prosthetist. The expertise of our prosthetists significantly influences decisions about surgical and medical interventions and shapes therapy plans. Our highly trained prosthetists are skilled in both upper and lower limb care. We have myotesting equipment available, aiding in the identification of optimal muscle sites for controlling myoelectric prosthetics.

Occupational Therapists

Our occupational therapists possess extensive experience in evaluating and treating individuals with various levels of amputation. They help identify significant roles and activities for each patient, aiding in the selection of the most suitable prosthesis. Working closely with surgeons and prosthetists, our occupational therapists communicate the patient’s progress throughout the rehabilitation journey.
